We chose this accommodation as a 'last minute' holiday, and were not put off by the fact that the reviews for the Helena Christina on this site are not in English! Now we can redress the balance (a bit!) but can confirm that we experienced all the good things mentioned by previous guests.
The hotel is actually a carefully thought-out building with 28 purpose built holiday apartments and accommodation for the family who own the business. The apartments sleep 1-4 persons, and all have a kitchenette (two rings and a fridge) with basic cooking equipment and an excellent bathroom with a nice deep bath with shower over. There was a good supply of hot water and excellent pressure. In addition each apartment has a balcony or terrace, and air conditioning can be paid for at a supplement of 45 € a week. We didn't need it during our stay in mid-May even though the weather was hot. The apartments are quiet and we were not disturbed by any noise from the apartments next to ours. The rooms were delightfully clean, and well maintained. Pool towels can be hired for 3€.
The building is set away from Rhodes town - but within easy reach - on a bluff, overlooking Trianda Bay and the Turkish coast. The gardens are well-kept with lawns, children's play equipment and flowers, with plenty of seating and loungers around the pool, which also has a separate children's area.
Adjacent to the pool is a bar with both covered seating and an open area, where breakfast is served and you can buy ice cream and drinks at honest prices.
Breakfast consists of juice, an egg, ham, cheese, and bread and jam with tea or coffee. In the evenings you can enjoy real Greek dishes that are cooked to order. The quality is high, the portions generous and the service friendly and efficient. We really enjoyed our meals there and also prepared our own simple meals in the kitchenette and ate them on the terrace.
The majority of the guests are German - the accommodation is offered by L'Tur and 1-2-3 Fly, but many of the guests book independently, and I would recommend that you consider doing this if you want to tour the island, enjoy a beach from time to time, and to relax in peace and quiet as well! The hotel's website is accurate and honest, and we found nothing to criticise in our visit whatsoever.
Our hosts were the Tsakiris family. Yannis and Dorothea have previous hotelier experience in Switzerland and their son Mikis married a joyous, talented Italian named Tiziana, who cooks up a storm. The hotel is named after Mikis and Tiziana's middle daughter, and their son Yannis is very enthusiastic in welcoming guests in several languages. In all, the family speak excellent English, French, Italian, German, Greek and probably several other languages, so there is no barrier to communication and we were made to feel very much at home. Antonis the waiter is a charming chap who speaks excellent English too and knows that the English like cold milk with their breakfast tea. A couple of ladies who keep the rooms spotless complete the professional and friendly team on the site.
It is imperative to have a hire car to reach this accommodation. Google Maps does not plot the location well, but the rental agencies can give good directions. Do not be put off by passing through a small industrial area to reach the entrance to this accommodation - though don't run over the sleeping dogs lying in the road en route! The accommodation is signposted Villa Elena Christina and has a security gate, but the road has a good surface and is well-lit.
We used our apartment as a basis for touring the island, and it was well placed for Rhodes Town (10 mins), the road for the East coast and beyond (Faliraki, Lindos) 3 mins, and the road for the West coast (airport, Kamiros, Monolithos) 5-7 mins depending on whether you took a wrong turn or two (which we did on more than one occasion!!!).
We found that our apartment suited our needs completely. Clean, comfortable (though it may take you a few days to get used to the pillows which are harder than we were used to!), our privacy was respected when we were in our rooms, but we always got a warm welcome when we went to the bar or to the pool.
Our fellow guests were also very respectful, and there were no problems from extraneous noise (except for some peacocks several miles away in the valley at dusk) and there were plenty of sun loungers!!!
We would willingly return here, and hope that if you decide to stay here, that you will enjoy yourselves as much as we did. Many thanks to the Tsakiris family for making our stay here exceptional.
