Turim Santa Maria

Spent two nights here in late January and we were pretty impressed. We arrived into Funchal Airport around midday, and under an hour later were at the hotel reception. We were a few hours earlier than the official check-in time, but our room was available. However what should have been a straightforward check-in became a more complicated one as we were asked for a voucher which we did not have. We had booked through Expedia and were not sent a voucher as part of this, and it took a while to explain this to the to the person checking us in. The room itself was at the front of the hotel and had a view of the cable car route. It was very clean and contemporary, with a very comfortable bed. There was adequate clothes storage space, a kettle for tea and coffee, a mini bar and a safe. The bathroom was immaculate with a good shower with quality toiletries provided. We had breakfast each morning and were really pleased with the range of hot and cold options on offer. The hotel is well located and is about a 15 minute walk from the Funchal old town, where there a wide range of shops and restaurants. It is also close to the port and to one end of the cable car. We only stayed at Turim Santa Maria for two nights but really enjoyed it and would recommend it when staying in Funchal.

Lovely looking reception area. Pleasant room on the 5th floor with a nice sea view but hasn’t enough draws for cloths or enough hangers for our two weeks stay. The beds were singles and were good apart from they had water-proof mattress protectors which make you uncomfortable and very hot in the night. It has lovely comfy sun loungers but the pool is too small to swim in. The breakfast had a good selection of food and plenty of it, but not good enough for a 4⭐️ rating.

We stayed for 9 days. The location is central for exploring Funchal, is clean and the staff are helpful, but it is completely soulless. Bedroom on 6th floor was spacious, but could do with more hangers and storage. Very beige/brown decor ….. perhaps a picture on the wall would brighten it up. No English breakfast tea in the room … you have to get it from the restaurant at breakfast, same with milk. The Restaurant is in the basement which feels a bit claustrophobic. No-one seems to use the lounge area/bar and the grand piano there apparently is broken, a wasted opportunity. The rooftop terrace is nice but the weather precluded us using it. The pool is very small and not heated.
